Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Hospital

The Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health Hospital (CABHH) program in Willmar, MN, is an inpatient psychiatric hospital for children ages 4 to 18. The hospital serves youth with complex mental illnesses and behavior disorders who cannot be treated in their home communities. In many cases, patients have multiple diagnoses that range from brain and behavior disorders to psychiatric and traumatic stress conditions. For most patients, other prior treatments have been ineffective.

    Treatment and therapeutic services

Treatment focuses on managing illness and changing behaviors that get in the way of meaningful personal growth and development. It also recognizes and builds on the strengths of the child and family to help meet treatment goals, help nurture and maintain healthy family relationships, and help patients reach their highest potential.

Clinical services are tailored to each patient’s needs and may include:

    • Comprehensive psychological testing and functional assessments
    • Medication evaluation and management
    • Symptom and developmentally focused treatment
    • Specialized, person-centered planning and treatment
    • Family engagement, psycho-education, and support

    Treatment team

The CABHH treatment team includes health care professionals from several disciplines, including:

    • Board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrists
    • Board-certified child and adolescent neuropsychologists
    • Psychiatric nurses
    • Occupational therapists
    • Social workers
    • Behavioral analysts
    • Pharmacists
    • Dietitians
    • Licensed drug and alcohol counselor

Throughout the course of hospitalization, the team conducts assessments and works with patients and families to plan treatment, set goals, and monitor progress.

    Discharge and aftercare treatment

When ready for discharge, all patients leave CABHS with a clear, individualized treatment plan designed to help families, medical and clinical professionals and others support them in their ongoing care. Throughout the course of hospitalization, aftercare treatment is carefully planned and coordinated with family, community-based services providers, county case managers, outpatient service providers and, when applicable, law enforcement and the courts.

    Referrals and admission

While the hospital admits children from anywhere in Minnesota, admission is by referral only to children who meet the medical criteria for hospitalization.

Anyone can make a referral to CABHH; however, county social service agencies, hospitals, outpatient providers, schools, parents, and the courts are the primary sources of referrals. To be admitted, patients must be pre-screened by professional pre-admission staff and have a referral from a medical or mental health professional indicating a need for hospitalization.

The criteria for admission to an acute-care hospital like CABHH are different than the criteria for admission to psychiatric residential treatment facilities or other types of inpatient programs that are not hospitals. CABHH admits only patients who meet the requirements for hospitalization and does not offer any kind of non-acute care residential treatment services. CABHH does provide triage and referral to more appropriate placements for patients who are not admitted.

Pre-certification of insurance is required prior to admission. Services are covered by most major insurance payers, including medical assistance.

    To make a referral, call Central Pre-Admissions at  (651) 431-5337 or (888) 883-0266
